The Bait Switch: Why Confidence Is the Biggest Opportunity in the Fishing Industry

For years, the live versus artificial bait debate has focused on one question: Which catches more fish?

For bait manufacturers and marketers, the more important question may be: What makes anglers trust one over the other?

Our latest research, The Bait Switch, surveyed 500 anglers across the United States to better understand how they choose bait, what influences their decisions, and where brands have the greatest opportunity to grow. The findings reveal a surprising truth. Artificial bait isn’t struggling to earn trial. It’s working to earn confidence.

Most Anglers Already Use Artificial Bait

One of the study’s biggest surprises is that anglers aren’t choosing sides.

Half of respondents regularly fish with both live and artificial bait, and 76% say they’re likely to try a new bait product within the next year. Even among anglers who trust live bait most, 86% still use artificial bait at least occasionally.

That changes the conversation. Artificial bait has already earned a place in anglers’ tackle boxes. The challenge now is increasing the number of situations where anglers feel confident reaching for it.

Confidence Drives High-Stakes Decisions

When success matters most, confidence outweighs convenience.

Our research found that 62% of anglers trust live bait more than artificial bait, and that preference becomes even stronger when fishing unfamiliar water, competing in tournaments, or targeting trophy fish.

Why?

Live bait has built decades of trust through familiarity and consistent results. Artificial bait offers convenience, durability, and ease of use, but many anglers still see it as the riskier choice when the outcome matters most.

For brands, that distinction is important. Marketing shouldn’t focus solely on convincing anglers to try artificial bait. It should focus on helping them believe it can deliver when confidence is on the line.

Proof Builds Trust

The study also revealed that brands aren’t the primary influence on bait decisions.

Nearly half of anglers rely on recommendations from friends and family, while personal success on the water shapes long-term confidence more than advertising ever could. Anglers who changed their opinion about artificial bait almost always pointed to a specific experience where it unexpectedly produced results.

That means bait brands have an opportunity to shift their content strategy.

Instead of simply highlighting product features, successful brands should demonstrate:

  • When to use artificial bait
  • How to fish it effectively
  • Why it performs in different conditions
  • Real success stories from anglers

Education and proof create confidence. Confidence creates repeat use.

Regional Differences Matter

The report also uncovered meaningful regional differences in attitudes toward artificial bait.

In some regions, the biggest challenge is overcoming long-standing habits. In others, it’s teaching technique or building trust through proof and experience. While the path to greater adoption is consistent, the messaging shouldn’t be. Brands that tailor their marketing to regional fishing cultures will be better positioned to connect with anglers where they are.

What Bait Brands Should Do Next

The findings point to five opportunities for brands looking to grow market share.

Teach the technique. Help anglers understand how to choose, present, and retrieve artificial bait successfully.

Focus on hybrid users. Growth is more likely to come from anglers who already use both bait types than from trying to convert loyal live-bait users overnight.

Show performance under pressure. Demonstrate artificial bait succeeding in the moments that matter most.

Reduce complexity. Products and messaging that make success feel easier build confidence faster.

Turn customers into advocates. Encourage anglers to share their experiences because peer recommendations carry more influence than traditional advertising.

The Future Belongs to Brands That Build Confidence

Artificial bait doesn’t have an awareness problem. It has a confidence opportunity.

The brands that invest in education, authentic storytelling, and real-world proof will be better positioned to earn a larger role in anglers’ decision-making. Those brands won’t just win more first-time buyers. They’ll build lasting trust that keeps anglers coming back.

If there’s one takeaway from The Bait Switch, it’s this: The battle isn’t trial. It’s belief.
